Wooly bluecurls (Trichostema lanatum Benth.) is traditionally used as a disinfectant and treatment for rheumatism by the Chumash people of Southern California. However, there were no scientific investigations to back up these applications of the plant. In this study, published in Medicines, researchers evaluated the antibacterial and immunomodulatory activities of extracts from the leaves of wooly bluecurls.
From the results of the study, the researchers concluded that wooly bluecurls is an effective disinfectant since it was able to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria. However, it was not effective against Gram-negative bacteria that have the ability to pump treatments out of the cell. The results also prove that wooly bluecurls is an effective treatment for rheumatism since it can regulate inflammation by inhibiting macrophage proliferation and TNF-alpha production.
