Brazilian fruit gabiroba is a natural remedy for diarrhea

Gabiroba (Campomanesia adamantium) is a native Brazilian fruit commonly used for treating stomach disorders. It was revealed in a study published in The Brazilian Journal of Pharmacognosy that the different bioactive compounds present in gabiroba extracts are responsible for its pharmacological activities.

  • Natives commonly drink gabiroba tea because of its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and anti-diarrheal activities. Aside from these, extracts from the leaves and fruits of the plant also showed antimicrobial, antioxidant, analgesic, and cytotoxic activity.
  • Leaves of the gabiroba plant contain terpenoids and chalcone derivatives, which are possibly responsible for the plant’s biological activities.
  • In this study, the researchers determined the different bioactive compounds present in volatile oils and extracted fractions from gabiroba leaves and flowers. They also evaluated the antimicrobial activity of these extracts.

Based on the results of the study, the bioactive compounds found in the chemical fractions include stictane-3,22-diol, valoneic acid, and gallic acid, while the volatile oils contained verbenene, beta-funebrene, limonene, sabinene, alpha-thujene, and methyl salicylate. The presence of these compounds was attributed for the antifungal and antibacterial activities that the researchers observed.
