Shirazi thyme holds potential as natural cure for IBS

A study published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements has found that Shirazi thyme (Zataria multiflora) can be used to manage the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In the article, Dr. Mohaddese Mahboubi of the Medical Plants Research Center of Barij in Iran reviewed the traditional uses of the herb and compared it with available scientific literature.

  • IBS is referred to as either ghoolenj rihi (IBS-C) or maghs rihi (IBS-D) in traditional Iranian medicine.
  • To note, one of the primary uses of Shirazi thyme in traditional medicine is to relieve the gastrointestinal tract from symptoms similar to that of IBS.
  • In the study, all accessible references (such as electronic and published books, theses, and reports) that mention the efficacy of the plant in managing IBS were identified.
  • From the review, it was determined that the main components of Shirazi thyme were carvacrol and thymol.
  • It also indicated that a daily dose of 60 drops of Shirazi thyme at 2-percent concentration can relieve IBS with no adverse effects.
  • Pharmacological studies on Shirazi thyme revealed that it contained anti-inflammatory, anti-spasm, and anti-ulcer properties.

The results indicated that Shirazi thyme essential oil can be used to manage symptoms of IBS.
