Treating pain-related conditions with extracts from the weeping wattle

Chronic inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, are often accompanied by intolerable pain. To get rid of inflammation and the pain associated with it, there are many plants that can be used, such as the weeping wattle (Peltophorum africanum). A study conducted by researchers from the Tshwane University of Technology and the University of Pretoria revealed the underlying mechanism behind weeping wattle’s anti-inflammatory activity.

  • Chronic inflammation is brought about by a coordinated activity involving transcription factors, kinases, and pro-inflammatory cytokines.
  • Extracts from weeping wattle are commonly used for treating chronic inflammatory conditions. Previous studies have shown that weeping wattle has anti-inflammatory and antiviral activities.
  • Isolated fractions and compounds from weeping wattle were evaluated for their inhibitory activity on the cytokine production of macrophages in cell culture.
  • Cytotoxicity of the fractions and compounds was also determined to eliminate the possibility that reduced inflammation was caused by cell death.

Based on the results of the study, the researchers were able to determine that fractions and compounds isolated from weeping wattle reduced inflammation through the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This can be attributed to the inhibition of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kappa B), which stimulates pro-inflammatory cytokine production.
