Resveratrol benefits women suffering from PCOS


Resveratrol may be beneficial to women suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), according to a recent study. The article, which was published in The Journal Of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, looked at the endocrine and metabolic effects of resveratrol on PCOS.

  • PCOS, which is the most common endocrine problem in women of reproductive age, is associated with an overproduction of androgenic hormones, infertility, and diabetes.
  • Earlier studies have reported that resveratrol reduces androgen production.
  • A team of researchers at Poznan University of Medical Sciences in Poland and the University of California, San Diego carried out the study over three months in 34 women with PCOS.
  • The research team gave the participants either 1,500 milligrams (mg) of resveratrol or a placebo every day. Only 30 participants completed the study.
  • The results showed that women with PCOS who received resveratrol experienced a 23.1 percent decrease in testosterone levels.
  • On the other hand, those who received the placebo treatment experienced a 2.9 increase in testosterone levels.
  • In addition, the resveratrol treatment group had a 22.2 percent reduction in dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) levels and a 31.8 percent decrease in insulin levels.
  • These results indicate that resveratrol significantly reduced ovarian and adrenal androgens.

In conclusion, the findings suggest that resveratrol may be used to effectively treat PCOS, as it reduces levels of testosterone, DHEAS, and insulin.
