The Siberian geranium has a hair growth-promoting effect

The herb called Siberian geranium (Geranium sibiricum) has been found by researchers at Chung-Ang University in Korea and the University of Hawaii in the U.S. to possesses properties that promote hair growth.

  • In the study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the researchers assessed the effects of the Siberian geranium extract on hair growth using in vitro and in vivo models.
  • Researchers discovered that the active compounds in the Siberian geranium extract are corilagin and gallic acid, which contributed to the promotion of hair growth by reducing inflammation in both in vitro and in vivo models.
  • The extract of Siberian geranium also contains high DPPH radical scavenging activity, which may prevent hair loss by protecting hair follicle cell from hydroperoxides.
  • The treatment of Siberian geranium extract worked better than the treatment of minoxidil, a drug used to treat hair loss, in terms of the proliferation and migration of human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs).
  • The extract also promoted the expression of the Ki-67 protein and the mRNA levels of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in hDPCs, supporting its ability to enhance hair growth.
  • In the in vivo model, the topical application of 1,000 milligrams per liter (mg/L) Siberian geranium extract for three weeks promoted more significant hair growth on shaved mice than minoxidil.
  • In addition, the extract of Siberian geranium significantly decreased the number of mast cells and the expression of transforming growth factor beta 1(TGF-?1) in mouse skin tissues, which in turn, prevented hair loss.
  • HGF, VEGF, and TGF-?1 all contribute to the growth and inhibition of hair follicular cells.

In conclusion, the study confirmed that the Siberian geranium extract treatment could enhance hair growth and prevent hair loss.
